viewfinder

made with @nex3's grid generator

really disappointed in this one. a brilliant mechanic - take a photo, use the photo to manipulate the world's architecture - used only to showcase shallow puzzles, a uninspired world, and a story whose characters and presentation actively detract from the game. viewfinder never hesitates to cloyingly tell you (and all of humanity!) possesses limitless creativity, because you managed to move a battery from one room to the other to open a door.

not a single character is distinct. none of their little paradise islands feels thematic or significant, and none of the puzzles or mechanics seem to match up with that person, their goals, their personality, or anything that you're trying to achieve. you're followed by not one but two incessant, cringeworthy voices in your ear, clapping for you whenever you manage to do the smallest little task.

there's so little that adds up about what's going on. you're in a world that seems to be a VR chamber, but these people seem to have lived there? eaten food? for years and years? I have to complete 17/17 of their levels (called "levels" in the parlance of the game) in order to do anything?

it's truly disappointing, not merely because the core mechanic is really neat, but because the rewind-to-redo accommodation is also a good one. I really hope that the people who have this mechanic in hand get the chance to do something better with it, some day.
