I've never been so at odds with a game before.
There's nothing more fun than barreling through these levels. I want nothing more than for more first person games - shooters, walking sims, immersive sims - to borrow these platforming mechanics liberally. The few real "fights" exist are thrilling. Getting a level right after trying over and over and over to clear the summit - there's no feeling like it.
The world is a beauty. The architecture, music, and interface put me in mind of Paradise Killer. although it reaches the fantastic excesses of that mystery game, it's better in a pulse-pounding, shooting-down-the-highway cool kind of way.
but nothing can get me to buy into these characters. not their cool masks, their supremely talented voice actors, or their deviously fun sidequest levels. they feel like a parody of a parody, unable to latch onto anything of real sincerity. every dialogue is a pratfall down a hill. at the bottom is either a meme, a reference, or a "oooh I'm so mad at you right now!" non-resolution. it's profoundly disappointing given some of the team's past work.
I bailed at the 11th hour and watched the endings on youtube. I love playing this game, but not enough to put up with it any more.
