dead space (2023)
a heart attack that lasts eleven hours. a world somehow capable of incredibly good spaceship design, diegetic UI, and environmental storytelling, and still has two of the same graffiti decal within 45 seconds of one another that says "fuck this ship, it is a shitty capitalist company", along with other nonsensical smears on the walls that can't be chalked up to the Marker's malign influence.
dead space remains exactly as you remember it: a slightly-too long, easy to play, well-designed horror show that turns the screws and never lets up. it is a grisly, awful looking spectacle. there are precious few moments of absurdity to break the tension, and the knowledge that this story will keep happening makes your eventual triumph even more anticlimactic than it already was.
here's hoping for dead space 2.
addendum: I do feel a sense of guilt for having just spent 11 hours playing something that, fundamentally, I have played to its fullest before, fifteen years ago. I am part of the problem. I do not want this to be the case for everything that has come before.
